(Application Specific Standard Part) A chip with custom-designed circuits that is used for a specific application in contrast to a general-purpose CPU. An ASSP is a specialized chip that becomes a standard part available to the public (see ASIC). For example, ASSPs are used in vehicle control and safety systems, DVD players, digital cameras and other mass market devices.
