Definition: XMPP

(EXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) An XML-based protocol for real-time communications, originally developed by Jeremie Miller in 1998 for the Jabber instant messaging system. In 2004, the IETF standardized four elements of the protocol, and the XMPP Standards Organization, formerly Jabber Software Foundation, is involved in future development. XMPP applications include instant messaging, presence, content syndication, as well as collaborative activities such as whiteboarding. See Jabber and presence.
