Microsoft's earlier online store for downloading free and paid Windows Phone applications from third-party developers. Launched in October 2010 as Windows Phone Marketplace, there were 5,000 apps available by year-end. Like Apple's App Store, submitted software was evaluated for compliance by Microsoft before being approved and made available to the public. See
