Definition: Windows Mixed Reality

Windows 10 Mixed Reality combines real and generated images using Microsoft's HoloLens goggles (see mixed reality). Introduced in 2015 as Windows Holographic, Windows Mixed Reality superimposes 3D holograms into the surrounding environment.

HoloLens
The first implementation of the platform was the HoloLens goggles, which evolved from Microsoft's Kinect technology but with a 120-degree field of vision. The HoloLens had a built-in CPU and GPU, as well as a holographic processing unit (HPU). In 2019, HoloLens 2 debuted with a more comfortable design and even wider viewing angle. However, in 2024, it was discontinued due to excessive competition from Apple and especially Meta, which had already been in the VR goggles business for 10 years (see Meta Quest). Tech Support
HP xRServices provides HoloLens 2 support for fixing equipment. In this example, an employee is able to replace a part he has never done before because a video showing how to do it is playing while he does the work. (Image courtesy of HP xRServices.)
