Definition: Windows Home Server

An earlier server OS from Microsoft that was introduced in 2007. Windows Home Server (WHS) was based on Windows Server 2003 with a simplified user interface for casual users. Windows Home Server 2011 was the final version of the product.

The primary advantage of a server is centralized storage and backup. As more homes become networked, photos and videos wind up on several machines and are often duplicated. WHS provided automated backup of data for all PCs in the network and could completely restore a failed machine. In order to use WHS, every PC in the network required WHS Connector software. WHS could also be set up as a Web server and accessed via the Internet. See Windows Server 2003.
