Definition: Windows 10 versions


Following are the client versions of Windows 10. When upgrading from Windows 7 or 8.1, Microsoft delivers Windows 10 with the same CPU word size (32 or 64 bit). For example, a 32-bit Windows 8.1 machine will be upgraded to a 32-bit Windows 10 operating system. See Windows 10 and Windows 10 updates.

Windows 10 Home
The basic Windows 10 version.

Windows 10 Pro
The Pro version adds data protection via encryption, remote desktop capability (access your PC remotely) and domain connectivity in company and school networks.

Windows 10 in S mode
Focused on Internet-based processing, S mode is similar to Google's Chromebook, and all apps come from the Microsoft Store. See Windows 10 S and Chromebook.

Windows 10 Enterprise (E3 and E5)
Volume purchases of Windows 10 Pro for large organizations. Windows 10 E3 is the basic Windows, while E5 adds Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP).

Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB
LTSB (Long Term Servicing Branch) is a lightweight version that does not include updates, Microsoft Store, Cortana, Edge or Media Player.

Windows 10 Enterprise for schools, colleges and universities.

Window 10 Mobile and Mobile Enterprise
Windows 10 for smartphones and tablets. The Enterprise version includes extra features for IT management.

Windows 10 IoT Core
Embedded version for low-cost IoT and similar devices.
