Definition: Windows IoT


(Windows Internet Of Things) A version of Windows for embedded systems. Introduced in 2001 as Windows XP Embedded, the name was subsequently changed to Windows Embedded and later Windows IoT coinciding with Windows 10 in 2015. Over the years, a variety of Windows embedded versions were introduced, all designed to operate in appliances, handhelds, sensors and other small devices.

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise
The original Windows 10 IoT Enterprise versions were the same as the desktop OS. The difference was the license. However, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2019 was changed to operate in a reduced processing environment. Windows Server IoT 2019, which differs only in the license for Windows Server 2019, was designed to collect data from many devices. See IoT.
