Definition: wave field synthesis

A surround sound technology that uses a large number of speakers. More like an object-based approach rather than channel based, wave field synthesis (WFS) is only viable in a movie theater. Based on the Huygens' Principle, WFS synthesizes an omnidirectional sound source with an infinite number of microphones located on its wave front. See surround sound.
