Definition: VDI


(1) (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) Coined by VMware for its VMware server and Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM), the VDI term is also used generically for desktop virtualization. Each desktop computer (VDI client) is running as a virtual machine (VM) in a server. See desktop virtualization and thin client.

(2) (Video Device Interface) An Intel standard for speeding up full-motion video performance. See DCI.

(3) (Virtual Device Interface) An ANSI standard format for creating device drivers. VDI was incorporated into CGI.
