Definition: VLSI


(1) (Very Large Scale Integration) An earlier measurement of transistor density on a chip. VLSI was between 100,000 and one million transistors. See SSI, MSI, LSI and ULSI.

(2) (VLSI Technology, Inc., Tempe, AZ) A designer and manufacturer of custom chips that was acquired in 1999 by Philips Semiconductors, a division of Royal Philips Electronics. In 2006, the company was renamed NXP Semiconductors.
