Definition: Tesla AI chips

AI chips designed by Tesla that provide autonomous driving (FSD) in its electric vehicles. Previously, Tesla's FSD chips came from Mobileye and NVIDIA.

Deployed in 2019, the Hardware 3 (HW3), later rebranded AI3, was the first Tesla-designed FSD inference chip. The 2025 generation became AI4. AI5 is expected in 2026, and AI6 is planned for 2027 or 2028.

Samsung is expected to make the AI6 chips in its new U.S. foundry in Taylor, Texas, and the initial order from Tesla for $16.5 billion may be only the beginning. Building the Taylor plant has been a gigantic undertaking (see Samsung).

Dojo Chips: D1 and D2
Tesla's Dojo 1 (D1) chip has been used for training the FSD models with the massive amounts of vision data collected from Tesla vehicles. The Dojo 2 (D2) project was dropped because the AI6 chip is designed for both training and inference (see Dojo supercomputer).
