Definition: computers for seniors

Senior citizens who use a computer for the first time often find navigating their way around very confusing. Following are two options:

Chromebooks
Although Chromebooks are not designed specifically for seniors, they are essentially little more than a Web browser. That means only one application provides access to every website in the world as well as email. Web-based word processing is also available, which means seniors never have to leave the browser. Nevertheless, the ease of navigating a website depends entirely on the design of the site's user interface. See Chromebook.

Specialized for Seniors
Occasionally, computers come on the market geared specifically to senior citizens and are advertised as such. They generally provide a menu of common functions as well as an easy way to enlarge the screen. Basic software plus antivirus is included so that users do not have to download any other programs until they feel comfortable with the new machine. Such computers run Windows or some variation of Linux. See computer.
