There are two kinds of TV remote control transmission technologies. The first is the traditional remote, which uses infrared (IR) signals. IR remotes must be aimed at the equipment because they require line of sight. The second is the more convenient radio frequency (RF) remote, which uses radio signals and does not require aiming. See
