Definition: TLDR Act

(Terms-of-service Labeling, Design and Readability Act) Federal government legislation that empowers the Federal Trade Commission to ensure that descriptions of tech services are easy to understand. Like the license agreements on desktop software packages, numerous mobile apps have legal provisions that must be accepted in order to use the product. Hardly anyone reads them (see EULA).

Proposed in early 2022, the TLDR Act requires stating "clearly" just which sensitive data are collected as well as options for deleting the data. It also requires declaring which rights are ceded by subscribing to the service and a summary of all recent changes to the software. Any data breaches in the past three years must also be stipulated.
