Definition: StorageTek

(Storage Technology Corporation, Louisville, CO) A leading provider of disk and tape storage solutions and services, founded in 1969. StorageTek is now part of Oracle because Sun acquired the company in 2005, and Oracle acquired Sun in 2010.

StorageTek's first products were open reel tape drives for IBM mainframes, and subsequent offerings included DLT, SDLT, LTO and 3480-based drives and libraries.

The Powderhorn tape library, which held up to 3,600 terabytes of data in 3480/3490 and StorageTek cartridges, was famous for being the largest nearline storage device in the world. A large part of StorageTek's business came from storage networking components, virtual storage technologies and professional services and maintenance.

Current StorageTek tape libraries use LTO cartridges and hold exabytes of data. See Redwood and tape library.
