Stereophiles, Audiophiles and Musicphiles
Stereophiles and audiophiles are essentially the same people. However, some will argue forever that one category of aficionado is more invested in how the equipment looks while the others are more interested in the sound quality. On the other hand, musicphiles are people who love music no matter what kind of equipment is being used. See audiophile and phonophile.

Going Strong After 50 Years
The first magazine dedicated to evaulating high-fidelity equipment, Stereophile started in Wallingford, Pennsylvania in 1962 by J. Gordon Holt. In 2012, it celebrated its 50th year, and in all that time, the magazine had only two editors: Holt handled the first 82 issues, and John Atkinson was responsible for the rest.

Hand-built to Order
Bob Carver's Silver Seven 700 amplifiers come with a 20-year warranty (including the tubes). At a 2014 price of $32,000 for a pair, each monoblock delivers 700 watts (RMS) of power into 8 ohms.

A Most Unusual Speaker Cable
Comprising 10 pure silver cables running in parallel and separated by carbon fiber discs to eliminate cross talk, these holographic SRX cables from Synergistic Research take 15 hours to hand build and cost $3,500 per foot. (Image courtesy of Synergistic Research.)

A Stereophile's Dream System
Rhapsody Audio specializes in high-end equipment, witness this system in its Brooklyn, New York headquarters. Retailing for more than $700,000, this stereo uses Roma Triode speakers from Diesis Audio in Italy, while turntable and amplifiers come from Audio Note in Japan. (Image courtesy of Rhapsody Audio.)
