Definition: PixelSense


(1) Microsoft's touchscreen technology that was introduced with its multitouch computer (see definition #2 below).

(2) A Windows-based multitouch tabletop computer from Microsoft that incorporates hand gestures and recognition of objects placed on or in front of the screen. Every screen pixel functions like a camera.

The PixelSense was designed for group participation without the use of a mouse or keyboard. Introduced in 2008 under the Microsoft Surface brand with a 30" rear projection screen, the unit was rebranded as Microsoft PixelSense in its second incarnation.

Samsung SUR40 with Microsoft PixelSense
In 2011, the redesigned Microsoft Surface with a 40" screen debuted as Samsung SUR40 with Microsoft PixelSense. Usable as a horizontal tabletop or in a vertical kiosk, its weight was reduced from 198 to 80 pounds. See multitouch and Surface versions.




An Electronic Light Table
