Definition: SCADA attack

Unauthorized access into a SCADA system in order to cause harm. Pumps and motors are made to run faster than normal, equipment is turned on and off, and valves and controls are switched erroneously, all of which are designed to make the machinery run out of control in a prescribed sequence. The system is either damaged, stops working altogether or causes some other type of destruction. The famous Stuxnet worm that damaged nuclear machinery in Iran is an example of a SCADA attack. See Stuxnet and SCADA.
