Definition: RAR


(Roshal ARchive) A data compression format developed by Eugene Roshal and released in 1993. Compressing data into the RAR format requires a commercial version of the product; however, there are free RAR applications for decompressing RAR files in all major platforms. See archive formats.




Compressed and Uncompressed
This Mac Finder example shows the original (unzipped) and compressed (zipped) sizes of the files in a RAR archive named alta-f2.rar. While archives are commonly used to shorten file sizes, their primary purpose is to group files into one for ease of transmission.
