Definition: RibbonFET

A transistor architecture from Intel announced in 2021. RibbonFET is the successor to the FinFET transistor in 2012. Ribbon-shaped channels are surrounded by the gate to provide better control and higher drive current at all voltages. A stack of "nano-ribbons" provide the same drive current with a smaller footprint than multiple fins. RibbonFET was announced along with a new chip architecture (see PowerVia). See Tri-Gate transistor.

Modulate the Ribbons
Instead of adding more fins for higher drive current, which led to issues with Intel's FinFET transistors, the width of RibbonFET channels (ribbons) can be sized for different applications. (Images courtesy of Intel.)
