AI-enhanced software for the iPhone and iPad debuting with the first update of iOS 18 in the fall of 2024 (iOS 18.1). Apple Intelligence is available on iPhone 16 models, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and newer generations of the iPad. It is also debuts on Version 15 of the macOS (see
Sequoia). See
iPhone versions.
A first leap into AI, Apple Intelligence was designed to work with everything a person does on an Apple device. For example, word processing is enhanced with writing tools that can proof read and even edit content as well as change the tone of a message. A "memory movie" can be curated from the stored photos. Important notices are moved to the front, and Apple's Mail app prioritizes messages. Audio from the Notes and Phone apps can be summarized, and photos can be searched with natural language. AI-generated images are created with a few taps, and, most significantly, Siri is integrated with ChatGPT, causing Apple to claim that "Siri has superpowers." See
OpenELM and
AI inference.
Private Cloud Compute
Although much of the AI processing (inference processing) is done in the local device, when necessary, processing takes place in Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers. Apple claims its servers are extremely secure, hence the "Private" moniker. This is very necessary because in order to assist people in so many areas, Apple's AI must review their data unencrypted.
Integrated Features, Not Products
With the Apple Intelligence announcement, Apple contends its AI functions are enhancements to its hardware and software rather than stand-alone products.
