Definition: PPD file

(PostScript Printer Description file) A PostScript file that describes the features of a particular printer or imagesetter. Capabilities such as paper sizes, number of input trays and duplexing are contained in the file, and the PostScript driver uses this data to command the printer properly. When a PPD file is unavailable for a particular printer, a "generic.ppd" file can be used that defines standard letter sizes and basic features only. The PPD file is an ASCII file that can be transferred between Windows and Mac. See PPD and BPD file.
