Definition: WorldGate

(WorldGate Communications, Inc.) A Pennsylvania company founded in 1995 to provide Internet access over existing TV cable. The technology, which used an advanced cable set-top box and wireless keyboard, transmitted Web data via the vertical blanking interval between TV frames. Citing industry delays in the adoption of interactive TV services, WorldGate changed direction and sold its IP to TVGateway, LLC in 2003. WorldGate's primary product became the Ojo videophone, enabling video calling up to 30 frames per second using only 150 kbps of bandwidth.
