Definition: optical neural network

An AI neural network that uses light instead of electricity. Optical neural networks (ONNs) offer the potential for higher speed because regular chips can only trigger a limited number of transistors simultaneously to keep the chip from melting. However, light does not succumb to the same heat problem. In 2017, an MIT experiment showed that a photonic chip could emulate the matrix multiplication required in neural networks, and it could do it faster. See neural network.
