A text area for the copy editors that precedes each definition in the source text of this encyclopedia. Added to the source files in 1998, codes identify the date the text was altered. The source text is converted into various formats for distribution, but the Notes field is left intact in the Windows version to keep the copy editors from wading through a long definition if only a small amount of text was changed. Codes Are Scanned for Various Purposes
The #chg (minor) and #nchg (major) are used to create lists for the copy editors, while #ref means a link was added, a typo was corrected or an extremely minor change was made. Term lists are generated for the Computer Words You Gotta Know app (#cwgn) for Windows and Tech Term of the Day (#ttod). When CDE became updated monthly in 2007, the month was added to the date.
