Since 2015, Meta Platforms has been testing new goggle technologies to augment its virtual reality product line. A major goal is to create variable focus (varifocal) displays that make objects appear more realistic in virtual space. Traditional VR goggles have single focus.
Previous varifocal designs were given the Half-Dome moniker; however, at the Los Angeles SIGGRAPH conference in August 2023, Meta showcased two new prototypes: the Butterscotch varifocal headset reduces eye strain, and the Flamera headset provides a more realistic pass-through to the real world.
