Definition: MapQuest
A mapping and navigation application for desktop and mobile devices from System1. Launched in 1996 as the Internet was gaining traction for the general public, MapQuest was the most popular mapping app until it was overtaken by Google Maps and Apple Maps.
MapQuest dates back to the launching of the Cartographic Services division of R.R. Donnelley & Sons in 1967, which created maps and routes from the 1970s to the 1990s. In 2000, MapQuest was acquired by AOL, but after AOL was acquired by Verizon in 2015, MapQuest became a Verizon service. In 2019, Verizon sold MapQuest to System1.
