(MPEG-
Dynamic
Adaptive
Streaming over
HTTP) An international standard for streaming video developed under the MPEG umbrella and based on the Adaptive HTTP protocol from the 3GPP alliance. It unifies features in Microsoft's Smooth Streaming, Adobe's HTTP Dynamic Streaming (HDS) and Apple's HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). The standard can handle any type of media format, but specifically supports the MPEG-2 TS format used by Apple and the fragmented MP4 (fMP4) format used by Adobe and Microsoft.
The DASH Industry Forum was founded in 2012, and founding members include Microsoft, Netflix, Samsung and Akamai. See
