Definition: Kaypro

A personal computer from Kaypro Corporation that debuted in 1981. Competing with the very popular Osborne 1, the CP/M-based Kaypro came with several applications that made it very appealing. Within a couple years, the company was selling more than 10,000 units per month. However, due to the popularity of the IBM PC, which was also launched in 1981, Kaypro Corporation went bankrupt in 1992. See CPM and Osborne 1.

The Kaypro II
Weighing nearly 30 pounds, one would hardly call it portable by today's standards. Nevertheless, the Kaypro II (there never was a Kaypro I) could be lugged from one place to another. (Image courtesy of Alfred J. Young.)
