(International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) An international federation founded in 1919 that is devoted to defining chemical terminology. IUPAC is the successor to the International Congress of Applied Chemistry.
IUPAC Names
IUPAC assigns unambiguous names to chemicals. For example, sodium hydrogen carbonate is the IUPAC name for baking soda. Sodium chloride is salt, and silicon dioxide is quartz.
