Definition: IDM dilemma

(Integrated Device Manufacturer dilemma) The situation IDMs face when the costs to making chips becomes exorbitant. The dilemma is whether to only design the chips and send the designs to a foundry or keep making them inhouse. Increasingly, new chips are more expensive to build, and the tradeoff between manufacturing them or sending them out is the dilemma manufacturers face. See IDM.
