Definition: HEVC

(High Efficiency Video Coding) A super high-definition video compression standard jointly developed by ITU and ISO. Also known as "H.265," HEVC supports 8K resolution (see 8K TV). Depending on the video content, HEVC can deliver the same video quality at half the bit rate of H.264/AVC encoding, enabling high-quality video to be transmitted over less bandwidth or higher-quality video over the same bandwidth.

The higher compression is achieved by further dividing blocks of pixels into smaller blocks and analyzing the differences between them. See MMT, HEIF, H.264 and BPG.
