Definition: Geac

(Geac Computer Corporation Limited, Markham, Ontario) A major Canadian software company acquired in early 2006 by Golden Gate Capital. Founded in 1971, and originally specializing in library automation, Geac was best known for its SmartStream financial, payroll and human resource applications, which were acquired when it purchased Dun & Bradstreet Software in 1996.

Golden Gate Capital reorganized Geac into two portfolio companies: Extensity became the keeper of SmartStream and other financial applications, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and Infor houses Geac's ERP software products that focus on manufacturing and distribution. Geac's library software that automates acquisitions, cataloging and circulation remained in Ontario. See D&B Software.
