Definition: Foursquare

An earlier social networking friend finder and loyalty card service. Founded in 2008 by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai, Foursquare members "checked in" via smartphone when visiting a venue and shared their location with friends, Facebook and X. Members could also leave tips to help future visitors. By 2025, the app was no longer available; however, Foursquare is still involved in commercial location services.

Points, Discounts, Badges and Mayorships
When users checked in, they got points to compare themselves with other members. After checking in some number of times, sponsoring companies offered members discounts and freebies and may have surprised them with achievement badges. If a Foursquare member checked into a venue more than anyone else in the past 60 days, the member became "mayor" of that venue.
