Definition: SCART connector

(Syndicat Français des Constructeurs d'Appareils Radio et Télévision connector) An A/V connector for analog signals used to connect VCRs and DVD players to TV sets and audio equipment. SCART was designed to eliminate cable confusion for novices by handling stereo audio, composite video, RGB video and S-video in a single plug and socket configuration. Developed by Peritel in France and also known as a "EURO connector," the SCART cable uses 21-pin male plugs at both ends, while the devices use female sockets.

Bidirectional
The composite video and analog lines are bidirectional, allowing over-the-air pay TV and teletext to be sent from the TV to a set-top box for decoding and then back to the TV.

SCART Plug and Socket
All analog signals, SCART handles stereo audio, composite video, RGB video and S-video in one cable connection.
