Definition: Error 53

The code displayed in an error message on the iPhone 6 when the device became inoperable after an iOS update. The condition was said to be due to the Touch ID sensor being repaired by a third party; however, users encountered Error 53 who did not have their devices serviced. In many cases, Apple replaced the failed unit, but not all, leading to a class action lawsuit in 2016.
