Definition: VESA Extended Display Identification Data

A VESA standard format used to transmit the make, model and characteristics of a monitor to the graphics card (display adapter) in the computer. Introduced in 1994 as a 128-byte structure, the VESA Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) is also used by an HDTV to identify its maximum resolution to the Blu-ray/DVD player, A/V receiver or video processor. Traveling over the HDMI cable, an HDTV states its preferred (native) resolution and all other supported resolutions.

Enhanced EDID (E-EDID)
Enhanced EDID supports additional data beyond 128 bytes and uses the structure in EDID 1.3 as the baseline. See VESA Display Data Channel.
