Gram) A sensor or sensors placed next to the skin that can detect a person's heart rhythm. ECG support has been added to smartwatches, enabling wearers to have periodic monitoring of their heart health. Also spelled "EKG" for cardio spelled with a "k."
ECG-equipped smartwatches can detect atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heart rhythm that can create clots in the heart that migrate to the brain and other parts of the body. However, an ECG taken in a doctor's office uses 12 leads attached to the body, whereas a watch has only one on the wrist. Nevertheless, smartwatch ECG results can provide an indication of health issues that require medical attention.
Echo vs. Electro
An ECG may also refer to an echo-cardiogram, which is an ultrasound picture of the heart muscles. See
