Definition: Digital Optimus

An AI software system from Tesla and xAI that emulates a human at the computer. Like chatbots, Digital Optimus needs to be trained, and the training means learning the steps the user takes at the computer over time to pick up the pattern. AI is all about pattern recognition (see AI in a nutshell).

What It Does
Digital Optimus is designed to augment a worker's day by handling repetitive computer tasks people normally do. The execution phase (inference) that does the work directs the computer with keystrokes and mouse movement from Tesla's datacenter as if a human were at the keyboard. Driver software is installed in the computer.

A Self-Driving Car in the Computer!
Digital Optimus analyzes operations similar to the camera on a Tesla self-driving vehicle. It sees what the human operator sees and logs what the human operator does. See Optimus, Grok and xAI.

Only Software
Tesla's humanoid robot named Optimus debuted in 2022 and Digital Optimus was announced four years later. Tesla uses the Optimus name because just as mechanical robots observe physical actions in the real world in order to replicate them, Digital Optimus observes the user/computer interaction in order to replicate it. See Optimus.

Macrohard
The Digital Optimus project was named Macrohard as a dig at Microsoft, because Microsoft sells a lot of basic office software that Digital Optimus will integrate with. But Elon Musk thinks big and would like Digital Optimus to learn all the computer functions to eventually replace the software everybody uses. Macro-hard putting Micro-soft out of business. Stay tuned but do not hold your breath!
