Definition: Golem Network

A distributed peer-to-peer supercomputer. The Golem Network combines the power of thousands of computers to offer a supercomputer that can be rented for applications such as machine learning, data analytics and scientific computations. The Golem Network is not based on a blockchain but payments are. Time is rented with GLM tokens on an Ethereum Layer 2 network.

Anyone Can Be a Golem Provider
Not just a virtual partition but an entire physical machine is recommended using a version of Linux. Windows and Macs can also be used running the WASI interface (see WebAssembly). Providers earn GLM tokens on Ethereum or Polygon. See virtual machine.

As of early 2022, more than 750 Golem providers were offering roughly 15,000 processing cores, 20TB of RAM and 150TB of storage.

Crowdfunded in a Half Hour
In November 2016, the Golem Network was crowdfunded with the target amount achieved in 29 minutes, and the first app was launched on Ethereum in 2018. Although the original token was the GNT, it changed to GLM in 2020, and the maximum supply of both is one billion.

A Demon or Devil?
Oddly enough, in Hebrew folklore, a golem is a creature made from inanimate matter that has been endowed with life. Sometimes, the purpose of the golem is to protect or be heroic. More often, there is a warning of destruction and tragedy when this mystic life-force goes awry. In other words, a demon or devil. See supercomputer and Ethereum.
