Definition: Decentraland

A virtual world that is recorded on the Ethereum blockchain. In Decentraland, players build their own digital environments, which includes games and communities. Introduced in 2020, MANA is the native token, and LAND are NFTs (non-fungible tokens). LAND is virtual space purchased with MANA, and adjacent parcels can be combined into Estates.

During the 2021 NFT summer, prices of land parcels reached the stratosphere. Like non-blockchain virtual worlds, players can purchase clothing and accessories for their avatars. See NFT summer.

Players Can Vote
Described as a "metaverse," Decentraland is governed by a DAO, which means players staking any of their Decentraland tokens can vote on changes to the protocol. The Decentraland community elects five members to its Security Advisory Board, which oversees security. See DAO, Ethereum, metaverse, Second Life and crypto glossary.

First Time on the Website
Anyone can experience this virtual world by going to the Decentraland.org website and selecting various scenes. The arrow points to a guest user, who just designed his own avatar and is able to explore several Decentraland communities.
