A low-speed wireless data technology developed by Motorola. Transmitting in the 800 MHz band at 19.2 Kbps, DataTAC was known for its ability to penetrate buildings better than higher-speed networks. DataTAC has been used for pagers, BlackBerry email and the technology behind the ARDIS network, created in 1983 for IBM field service technicians. In 1998, ARDIS merged with American Mobile Satellite to become Motient Corporation. In 2000, ARDIS took the name of its DataTAC network. DataTAC 4000 describes the U.S. public network. DataTAC 5000 is used in Europe, and DataTAC 6000 is implemented in Asia. See
