Definition: DataPlay

A removable micro-optical disc from DataPlay, Inc., Longmont, CO, that was designed for PDAs and digital music players. Available in 250MB and 500MB capacities with a 32mm platter about 1/4" more in diameter than a quarter, the disks were used for music and computer data. DataPlay's technology enabled paid material to be prerecorded and activated over the Web, but the discs never caught on.

DataPlay Cartridge
The disc provided 80% of the capacity of a CD or CD-ROM at a fraction of the size.
