Definition: DOS/Windows format

DOS and earlier versions of Windows used a file system known as the File Allocation Table (FAT) to keep track of data on a disk. All floppy disks and hard disks were initialized with the high-level FAT format before use. With the introduction of Windows NT, the NTFS file format was introduced (see NTFS). See format program and FAT.
