Definition: DNS server


(Domain Name System server) A dedicated server, cluster of servers or a service within a server that provides name resolution in an IP network. A DNS server turns names for websites and network resources into numeric IP addresses. DNS servers are used in all ISPs, in large companies and within the DNS system in the Internet, the latter an essential service that keeps the Internet running.
