Definition: Open Directory Project

An earlier database of websites organized by subject. Originally developed by two Sun engineers in 1998 and called "Gnuhoo," it was soon renamed "NewHoo" and then acquired by Netscape, which renamed it Open Directory Project (ODP). The directory was maintained by volunteer editors, and its now-defunct dmoz.org URL came from Netscape's Mozilla brand (DirectoryMOZilla). See Mozilla and directory.
