Service) A radio service in the U.S. licensed to individuals at least 18 years of age. GMRS transmits in the 462 and 467 MHz bands and shares the 462 MHz spectrum with the family radio service (see
FRS). Originally the Class A Citizens Radio Service from the 1960s, GMRS licenses were available to companies until 1987. Family members may also use the service of the licensee. The typical range depending on transmitters is from two to five miles. GMRS repeaters can extend the range to 20 miles. See
