Definition: Carbonite


A cloud storage provider located in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 2006, Carbonite automatically backs up files and folders selected by the customer. A Carbonite program works in the background and provides incremental backup, wherein some number of previous copies of a file are maintained for a period of time.

In 2018, Carbonite acquired Mozy, a cloud storage service that was part of Dell Technologies, and Mozy customers migrated to Carbonite. See incremental backup and cloud storage.




Green Dot Identification
The green dots in this Explorer window indicate which folders the user has selected for Carbonite backup. Right clicking the folder allows the user to select a menu of file names that Carbonite has backed up.
