Definition: Bitcoin authorship

Since 2009, the true identity of the designer of Bitcoin has been unknown, and Satoshi Nakamoto has been the name of the pseudonymous creator. However, in 2024, a legal battle began in a London court over ownership. Australian computer scientist Dr. Craig Wright claimed to be the author of the 2008 white paper describing the Bitcoin architecture, and he has claimed ownership since 2016. Wright's lawyer argued that if he were not the author, somebody else would have come forth by now to claim the title.

The Verdict
After a six-week trial, judge Sir Edward Mellor determined that Wright forged evidence and can never again bring a lawsuit in the U.K. claiming Bitcoin ownership.

Another Claim
In October 2024, HBO released a documentary claiming Canadian crypto developer Peter Todd is the real Nakamoto (see Satoshi documentary). See Satoshi Nakamoto.
