Definition: Silicon Desert


The greater Phoenix, Arizona area, which has become a major hub for semiconductor fabrication. Companies such as Intel and Microchip have been in greater Phoenix for decades, and auxiliary companies have moved in to support them.

Starting in the 2020s, Intel began to build a new chip plant in Chandler, and TSMC began development of multiple plants in Northern Phoenix with thousands of new jobs. Silicon Desert is increasingly called the "Chip Capital of America."

Only an Hour to Silicon Valley
Silicon Desert is only an hour flight to Silicon Valley in California, which has the greatest density of hardware and software companies in America. There are also many chip design centers in Silicon Valley. See high-tech regions and semiconductor companies.
